The Spring Special Olympics for Area 22 was held once again at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU).  There were more than 900 Special Olympics participants.  Volunteers (high school students,  lead participants, announcers, event staff, and SVSU students that helped set up the event) outnumbered the Special Olympians.  There were more than 2,500 people at the event.

A special thanks to Ronald McDonald and McDonald restaurants who furnished the food and fed everyone in 30 minutes.

A huge NCOA Welcome to NCOA’s newest chapter – the Sunflake Chapter at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota.  NCOA Past Grand Knight Stephen Vogt recently swore in the chapter’s Trustees and Executive Committee members.  We look forward to hearing about all the great things the chapter is planning under the leadership of Chapter Chairman Ronald Vicente and his dedicated team!

Special thanks go out to NCOA Past Grand Knight Stephen Vogt and NCOA Board Member Joseph Terry for their mentor support and efforts to assist this motivated chapter off the ground.

 

Down East Chapter Hosts Awards Ceremony

The NCOA Down East Chapter #906 recently hosted the 25th Annual SgtMaj C. A. “Mack” McKinney Awards Ceremony at Sywanyk’s Scarlett and Gold Traditions in Jacksonville, NC.

The 2017 recipients were Major General Walter Lee Miller, Jr., Commanding General, II Marine Expeditionary Force, and Master Gunnery Sergeant Paul Levesque, USMC (Ret).   Down East Chapter Chairman Paul Miethker, a retired Navy chief hospital corpsman, presented the awards to Miller and Levesque before a crowd of military officials and veterans.

Levesque retired from the Marine Corps in 1995, serving as the communication-electronics maintenance chief and platoon leader with the 8th Comm Battalion, II MEF.  After retirement, Levesque became involved in several local veteran organizations including the Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Rolling Thunder Inc. Chapter NC-5.

Miller was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1980 after graduating from Texas A&M University. According to information provided by event organizers, Miller has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and to Japan, Turkey, Kosovo, Djibouti, Kenya and the Republic of Panama.   The major general currently serves as the commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Members of the Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 were also presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Down East Chapter, which was accepted by Marine Corps League Detachment Commandant Tim Manchester, a retired sergeant major.

The McKinney Award was named after Marine Sgt. Maj. C. A. “Mack” McKinney, who retired in 1971 and worked to establish legislature benefiting the military community. The award is presented to military members who have demonstrated professionalism, dedication and service to the United States and its military over a sustained period of time.’s also presented to members of the local community who have demonstrated a strong support for the military community. The “Mack” McKinney Award was established in 1992 and was first presented in January 1992.

Down East Chapter Chairman Paul Miethker presents a Certificate of Appreciation to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune’s Commanding Officer, Jim Hancock.

A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune’s Commanding Officer, Jim Hancock, during morning colors on December 22, 2016. The certificate was presented by NCOA Down East Chapter #906 Chairman Paul Miethker. The certificate was awarded to the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune for Loyalty and Patriotism to our country by Publicly and Proudly Displaying The American Flag.

Bringing Holiday Cheer

More than 30 volunteers took time to visit the Hyesimwon Youth Center recently to bring holiday cheer to more than 50 of the children living there. Members of the NCOA Dragon Hill Chapter, MARFOR-K, 121st CSH and others joined together to provide dinner, toys and more. Some even joined in to sing a few Christmas tunes with the children! A great time was had by the children and volunteers alike!

Rogue Chapter Hosts Snowflake Event

The NCOA Rogue Chapter recently hosted a Snowflake event at Hellgate Jetboat Excursions in Grant’s Pass, Oregon, on the Rogue River.

Sir Thomas Gerken, Magnum Force Chapter’s Scholarship Chairman presents a Certificate of Achievement to Emilee LeRoux, recipient of an NCOA Magnum Force Chapter Scholarship. Emilee plans to attend Michigan State University. One of the first things on her “to-do” list is to purchase a MSU hat for her grandfather who is an avid University of Michigan fan!

The NCOA Korea Dragon Hill Chapter recently presented scholarships to 2 Seoul American High School Seniors. Jay Kim and Latisha Dolford each received scholarships in the amount of $1000.00. Ariyana Canty from Dague High School was also selected to receive a chapter scholarship. The Dragon Hill Chapter recently presented the NCOA JROTC Award, medal, and certificate, and a chapter coin at the JROTC Pass-In-Review on 25 May, to two Cadet 1SGs.  Both cadets did an outstanding job as first sergeants of their respective companies within the Falcon Command.
